I have always been very active but have had to move on to different sports and activities as I have aged!
I played badminton to a reasonable level until in my mid 30’s and played for Blackburn town team several times. About 25 years ago, Blackburn held a “Superstars” type event and invited competitors from a number of different sports to compete with each other so there was a footballer, rugby player, cyclist, etc. I represented badminton. There were 6 activities ranging from sit ups to rowing, squat thrusts, etc. I won. It has net been held since so it could be argued that I am Blackburn’s undefeated superstar!
When my back started complaining because of badminton, I joined a gym, started swimming and took up spin classes and circuit training 5 times per week. About 10-15 years ago, I started cycling during the summer and went back to the gym circuit training and spinning during the winter. For the last 2 years, I have stuck to cycling all year round but in the winter months, have limited it to travelling to and from work and doing the occasional ride for charity. I have done the annual Manchester to Blackpool ride for about 7 years and did the Skipton 100 mile challenge about 5 years ago which was tough .
I like to support cancer charities when I can. My father lost a very long painful battle with the disease some years ago and I have also had a brush with it. Whilst I have been involved with cycling events over the years, I have not done anything as challenging this and, whilst being apprehensive, am looking forward to the challenge. Please be gentle with me!
